Hold It Tune Up Tunes® contain three pieces that focus on the dotted quarter note in both the RH melody and LH accompaniment. Students will love the jazziness of Sticky Note, the intensity of Hold On, and the tenderness of Hold Me. There’s a wonderful variety of musical styles within these three pieces, giving students a fun way to practice the dotted quarter note!
In addition, each piece focuses on the quarter note in just one position in the measure. So in the first piece, the dotted quarter is always on beat one. In the second piece, the dotted quarter is always on beat two. And in the third piece, the dotted quarter is always on beat three.
Included are these one-page pieces:
- Hold On!
- Sticky Note
- Hold Me
What Level is Hold It?
Hold It pieces are late elementary. The smallest note value is an eighth note, with a strong emphasis on dotted quarter notes in both the right hand and left hand. There are no key signatures written in, but accidentals are written throughout. Two of the pieces (Sticky Note and Hold On!) contain quite a few written-in accidentals. The “feel” of Sticky Note is similar to other jazz songs that make the dotted quarter note much easier to feel.
What is the Tune Up Concept?
This set of Tune Up Tunes® tunes up:
- Rhythm accuracy for dotted quarter notes
- In each piece, the dotted quarter is on a different beats: Piece 1 – on beat 1; Piece 2 – on beat 2; Piece 3 – on beat 3

Kate –
So useful as a quick go to, to reinforce the dotted crotchet quaver rhythm, for first timers, for reviewers and for sight readers. Thank you.
Jeanne –
My students love these pieces! They are crafted in a brilliant way to teach not only counting but the sound and the feel of the dotted quarter/8th rhythm. Another rhythm problem solved. Thank you Wendy Stevens!
Estelle –
I am delighted to have used the Solutions Catalogue to find this “fresh”-sounding set of pieces to suit my student’s personal musical taste and my teaching focus… and the recordings will be so helpful to send home – thanks!
Stephani Austin –
These are so clever! I love that each has the dotted quarter in a different beat in each song. There’s consistency in each song and variety in the set to teach different skills.
Gayla –
The Tune It Up Tunes (specifically Hold It!) have been very helpful.
Pam –
I have used Hold It three tunes to help teach the dotted crotchet/quaver rhythm and each puts the rhythm into a different part of the bar. The children loved the lively tunes and the fact that they were short and snappy.
