Fanfare is one of several one-handed pieces by Diane Hidy. This right-hand-only piece is triumphant and celebratory, while staying away from the trope of sounding overtly joyous. This is a proud moment that has been hard fought and hard won. Time changes in the piece allow the student to paint a picture of the tides finally turning in the hero’s favor so that they are now victorious. The use of cluster notes in the first motif give the same sound as horns blowing to announce the arrival of the proud victor, giving the piece a mature sound.
What Level is Fanfare?
Fanfare is a late elementary piece written for right hand only. It is written in d minor with accidentals written throughout. The piece begins in 4/4, changes to 6/4, and ends in 4/4. The smallest note value is an eighth note. Pedaling is written in throughout.
Multiple octaves are explored, but in a very accessible way. There are helpful fingerings written throughout, and the piece falls easily under the fingers. Dynamics and articulation markings make the piece sound mature and help tell the story, making it a wonderful opportunity for students to practice the more artistic elements of the piece.

Betsy –
This piece was a perfect solution for an older-beginner teen boy who broke a finger playing basketball. Engaging, big sounds and the challenge of identifying chord shapes were just the thing to keep him excited about playing while he was limited to just his right hand and also continue to grow as a musician with such an artistic piece. I highly recommend Fanfare!
