Can you hear her waltzing dangerously close? She’s creepy and crawly, graceful and captivating – and inviting you to dance. Will you be able to keep up with her waltz and escape her clutches? It all depends on whether you can master the chromatic phrases that sound as if you’re barely escaping one of her many legs!
This early intermediate Black Widow Waltz will be especially appealing to teens, who want to take part in the creepy crawly spookiness of the season, but don’t want Halloween music that sounds “kiddish”.
What Level is Black Widow Waltz?
Black Widow Waltz is an early intermediate piece written in F minor. There is no key signature, but all accidentals are indicated. It is written in 6/8, and the smallest note value is an eighth note. There is no pedaling. Helpful fingerings are included, and dynamic markings are indicated.
Both hands play bass clef for several measures, and then both hands play treble clef for one measure at the end of the piece. Staccatos are used throughout Black Widow Waltz, and sound just like eight legs swiftly dancing across the floor. The piece falls easily under even small hands.
Is This Really a Waltz?
Yes! Though most waltzes are written in 3/4 time, some of the fastest Viennese waltzes are surprisingly written in 6/8 time. Diane Hidy was purposeful in writing this piece in 6/8 meter.
Bonus
With your purchase of the Black Widow Waltz studio license, you will receive a bonus mp3 recording of the piece performed by Diane Hidy. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
What is the Studio License?
Black Widow Waltz is delivered digitally (through your email receipt) and is studio licensed. This means that you can print and use these for any student that you directly teach for your entire lifetime of teaching.

Kyle –
My students are LOVING the black widow waltz 🙂
Kathleen –
My most advanced student ( intermediate) has learned Black Widow Waltz and likes it. She’s working on increasing the tempo, but learned it rather quickly, especially in light of the fact that she’s not practicing much!
LiPing –
My students and myself are truly enjoying these Halloween pieces from ComposeCreate.com. They are fresh, interesting, beautiful, energetic, a bit challenging yet so much fun and rewarding to play. My students smiled with joy when I said to them, “Polish up the first piece in order to receive the next.” Great thanks to you, Diane and Jason!
Lisa Bush –
Gave this to a young boy who needs motivational pieces so he will practice — Learned this song in one week and won’t stop playing it. A hit!

Escape from Donegal Castle has proved very popular – as has Black Widow Waltz and Jason Sifford’s Howling Winds.
