Got an iPad for Christmas?

Congratulations! If you got an iPad for Christmas, I’m sure you are doing one of two things:

  1. Busily downloading free apps, experimenting with all the apps already there, and just tapping away having a great time. OR
  2. Looking at it strangely, fumbling around with it, and wondering how in the world you’ll learn what you need to make it useful and fun in your life.

Well, if you are in either of these camps AND you happen to be a piano teacher, here’s what you need to do to learn to use this tool in your studio:

Buy The iPad Piano Studio

I know you have a few questions, so I’ll just go ahead and ask and answer them here:

  1. Was this really written by a piano teacher? I mean one that actually has students come to her house and learn classical, jazz, church, theory, and all kinds of music?
Yes, as a matter of fact, this is by Leila Viss, who you’ve probably realized by now is not only a piano teacher, but an amazingly creative piano teacher who has good business sense (so she’s not just a hobbyist), an amazing way to coax creativity from her students, and is an excellent musician herself. She also happens to know how to write.
  2. Is this book techy? Cause I can’t understand half of what most tech people say-even in the piano world!
Nope. This book is as down-to-earth, easy-to-read as you can get. That’s what I mean when I say that Leila knows how to write. She is well organized, speaks our musical language, understands tech language, but isn’t a “techy” herself. She’s one of us and she can easily lead you through how to use this in your studio.
  3. Why do I need this book? Can’t I just download music apps and experiment?
Of course. But as you know, there are now thousands of music apps out there and Leila’s already tested so many of them and can tell you which ones to download and buy or skip. She’ll save you hours, days, maybe even months of your life with her advice.
  4. Why should I use this in my studio?
Well, Leila can tell you more about that in the first few chapters of her book, but your students probably already have an iPad in their possession, so using in the studio and showing them what apps they can use at home will just extend your realm of musical influence in their life. Imagine a student doing a theory assignment because they want to and because it’s fun!
  5. How do I learn more?
Just visit the iPad Piano Studio Website. You can get a digital download or a paper version of the book. Honestly, I like the paper version because I can mark it easily. But you can get either on the site.

  1. I got an iPad air for Christmas (planned), and had just ordered and received the iPad Piano Studio book. I am so looking forward to learning how to use it in my teaching. After teaching for so many years, I so much appreciate every opportunity to try new ideas – I believe that if I, as a teacher, am continuing to learn, it helps me relate to the student, and hopefully keep the learning exciting and not boring.
