Composition Winners

This week, the Piano Explorer announced the winners of the 2009 Composition Contest.  I’m thrilled to report that my student, Jana Heady won 1st place in the younger division and Nicole Jack won an Honorable Mention in the older division!

This year’s theme was “My Favorite Book or Movie Character.”  Jana’s piece was about Baloo from The Jungle Book.  Here is what she wrote about her piece:

Baloo is a very happy, playful bear.  He’s not a big scary bear like you would expect.  he would be a good friend to have because he is loyal, kind, and funky.  I picked Baloo because I could play happy sounding notes on the piano to show his personality.

Nicole chose to write about Corrie Ten Boom.  Here is what she wrote:

I wrote this piece about Corrie Ten Boom, the main character in the book The Hiding Place. This book relates the story of Corrie and her sister, Betsy, who were put into a concentration camp by the Nazis for hiding Jews.  Their faith in Jesus during the trials they go through is truly amazing. At one part in the book Betsy says to Corrie “… no pit is so deep that He is not deeper still…”

One interesting thing about this piece is it has sevenths woven all throughout it. At the beginning there are seventh chords playing in the right hand while the left hand has the melody.  Then when the B section comes, there is a beautiful jump to a seventh.    I hope this piece will bless you as you think about how Jesus is always with His children even in the deepest pit.

Congratulation to these and all my students who wrote such interesting pieces!
