It’s so cold these days and I’m guessing you and your students might be needing a little energy boost in this new year. So, it’s with great pleasure that I share with you how one fun loving teacher is using the Free Snowman Flashcards for a note naming challenge game in her studio.
The Frosty Note-Name Challenge
Here is Chrisanne Holm’s fun idea:
Each month in my studio, I have a different themed “Challenge” for my students to add a little competition to learning Note Names and Music Terminology. I find they are more eager to work on these skills with a little competition within the studio.
This month, I’m using the Snowman Note Names Flashcards and calling it the “Frosty Challenge.” I print and laminate the cards – then cut them out. I divide my studio into levels – Primer, 1, 2 and 3+ – then divide the cards into:
Primer – all notes introduced in that level
Level 1Â – all Primer notes PLUS new notes for level 1
Level 2Â – all Primer, 1, plus new notes for level 2
Upper Level – the remaining notes not yet introduced in previous levels.Make a time chart – maximum of two tries – fastest time in each level wins a large box of candy ($1 size – I stock up when it’s on sale). Last day to try it is the last day of the month. THANK YOU for making these cards available to teachers!  I’m planning to use the Steps and Skips cards at the piano during lessons.
The Snowman Flashcards are free and are intended to be a matching game for students learning note names and steps and skips. So feel free to download and use these right now in your studio!

Great resource and perfect for this time of year!
These are adorable! I was thinking they would also be fun for a group lesson. Maybe divide into teams of 2 or 3 students and give each team a set of snowmen cards and then race to see which team can correctly match their cards first! Thank you so much for sharing them with us 😀
My students are having fun with these! Treble staff was last week, bass staff is this week. Having some surprising results, surprising even the students! Thanks for sharing Wendy!
Thank you, Wendy!! I may use the note naming game with my students at our group lesson tomorrow; it depends on whether I can get them printed by then. ha!
Hi, Wendy,
I tried to open the link to the P-Yew Game without success.
Dixie
Hi Dixie!
P-Yew is a piece of sheet music that you can get at Hal Leonard (sorry, we don’t sell it at this time): https://www.halleonard.com/product/viewproduct.action?itemid=123215&lid=0&keywords=p-yew&subsiteid=1&
So, it’s not a game. Let me know if you have any questions!
