Zombies are a classic Halloween creature – but what if the piece was being played as if you were the zombie? In Zoneless Zombies, students get to mimic the heavy plodding of the undead as they make their aimless way through town. Cluster chords in the right hand give a creepy sound, while staccatos give just enough personality and movement to keep the zombies moving forward through the night.
Level of Zoneless Zombies
Zoneless Zombies is a late elementary piece written in A Hungarian minor. The smallest note value is a quarter note. The entire piece has both hands playing in bass clef. There is one time signature change from 4/4 to 2/4 (for one measure only) before going back to 4/4 again. There is pedaling in the last two measures only.
This piece is wonderful practice for phrasing with staccatos. The staccatos give the sort of “hop-drag-hop-drag” walk zombies are famous for, while the phrasings represent their slow, steady plodding along. Using visuals is a wonderful way for students to finally click with a musical idea like staccatos and phrasings being used together. Dynamics are indicated. Helpful fingerings are included, and all hand position changes are indicated with a circled number so that students know whether to change just the finger number or the entire hand position.
Bonus
As with all ComposeCreate® music, Zoneless Zombies comes with the creative and fun cover. But we also include an mp3 recording of the composer playing the piece. This can help inspire and help students learn the piece quickly during the short Halloween season.
What is a studio license?
Zoneless Zombies comes with a studio license which licenses the purchasing teacher to print as many copies as needed for any student they directly teach. So it is like getting an unlimited supply of this Music Kids Love® for yourself and your students. The studio license is not a multi-teacher license, so it can only be used by one teacher. However, the music and bonus can be used by as many students as the purchasing teacher directly instructs on a regular basis.

Today my student picked this as her ‘Halloween’ challenge piece because “It’s loud”. Zoneless Zombies starts with quite a presence and students just love the rhythm from the get go. A favourite with my mid to late-elementary students.

This is a “statement” piece and it is fabulous! The drama of this is thrilling to young ears and fingers. It is written so cleverly with repeated patterns and curious intervals that are so manageable. This is a winner!

Zoneless Zombies is one of those wonderful pieces that sound difficult, but are actually easy to play. The right hand has powerful chords that are repeated and just move step wise to create a powerful ending.

One of my students is working on this piece and loves it.

Excellent late elementary piece! My daughter picked it for her Halloween solo and really enjoyed it
