Teaching adult piano students can feel intimidating and sometimes even awkward and foreign. There’s so much left unsaid and so many inaccurate things assumed. But this Weird to Wonderful workshop will help you learn:
How the typical adult piano student thinks (it’s different than children)- How to attract adult piano students to your studio
- Ideas for marketing to find adult students
- Alternative tuition and schedule structures that work better for adults
- How change your mindset about teaching adults
- How to set them up for success
- New pieces to motivate the adult student to practice and continue lessons
Included in your Weird to Wonderful purchase is:
- Access to the recorded workshop for 3 months from date of purchase. The workshop is approximately 1.5 hours long with a little extra for Q&A.
- Images created for you to use on social or on your website to help advertise and attract adult students
- A fill-in-the-blank handout to help you follow along (watch for this in your email the day before the workshop. We’ll also give it to you at the workshop.)
- Editable flyers to help advertise your studio (this comes after you watch the workshop)
- Professional Development Certificate
How long do I have to watch it? How do I access it?
You will have access to the workshop immediately after purchase! All the information about watching it will be in your follow-up receipt from [email protected]. You will be able to start and stop the video from anywhere, replay any part you want.
You will have 3 months from the date of purchase to watch the workshop. No refunds are given if you do not watch during that time.
Why is there an expiration date?
We want to keep the price of this online, intensive, and we-don’t-waste-any-of-your-time workshops as low as possible. But we also want them to be as high quality as possible, so we pay for monthly access to a top-notch video hosting site. We would have to charge more if we knew that we had to pay for this hosting service for the rest of our lives!
We want you to learn and implement these things as soon as possible for best results. Therefore, watching it as soon as possible, but having 2 months of access gives a lot of opportunity to re-watch…which is much better than a live event. In addition, information changes. We don’t want you to be watching this workshop 2 years from now if the information is irrelevant or no longer useful.
Can more than one teacher watch this with my purchase?
No. This workshop is only for the teacher who purchased it. Other teachers can join separately by purchasing the workshop themselves.
Is this just for piano teachers?
No, definitely not. This is open and applicable to any teacher who wants to be more successful with adult students. While we will briefly mention some of our piano music and show examples of using the principles demonstrated with some piano activities, this content is applicable to any music teacher, no matter what instrument.

A wonderful workshop! From teaching tips to business tips it was really helpful and engaging. I assigned an adult student Dusty Blue the same afternoon and she learned the whole piece during the lesson! Also it was nice to be a part of the community of piano teachers that attended. We all need each other!

Wendy Stevens offers her insight into the particular challenges of teaching and marketing to adult students. Her tips and tricks have changed how I think about adult students. Highly Recommended to anyone that wants to expand their studio!
Jan Foreman –
I’m going to use some of the music I purchased (especially the rote with my beginners, since they need a quick win and to sound beautiful) with my senior adult group classes THIS WEEK!
Thanks!

The webinar “Weird to Wonderful” was excellent! No stone was left unturned! Everything to be successful in teaching adults as part of your piano studio! I am now excited to begin working with and teaching adults how to play the piano! I can’t wait!

Wendy and Amanda presented so many excellent ideas about working with adults. I found so much inspiration and validation in their comments about understanding adults’ struggle with feeling like a beginner, giving adult students lots of choice in what styles of music to learn, and building a strong relationship. They also had some very compelling ideas on marketing to adults to gain more students. If you each adults, or want to teach adults, this workshop is for you!

The material presented in this workshop is comprehensive and informative. I learned so much about adult learners as well as ways to motivate, inspire and attract them to my studio. The simple but beautiful pieces written for adult students, especially beginners, will bring smiles to many faces as they are performed. Compose Create workshops give practical ideas to educators for helping students of all ages achieve success and gain a feeling of satisfaction.

I would gladly pay for workshops from now until forever if they were all this straightforward, well-organized, and stuffed full of useful information. Wendy and Amanda did a fantastic job of this workshop! Both were very well-organized, presented their information clearly and didn’t fluff around with small-talk and time-fillers. I appreciated their professional but still personable presentation styles and how they answered questions at the end (not haphazardly throughout the workshop). Efficient and super effective…loved it! Looking forward to future workshops with Wendy, Amanda & Team. Thanks!

Thank you and Amanda so much for this workshop! So many great resources that I can apply to my current students (ages 5-17) right away! You and Amanda are simply amazing!

I attended your “weird to wonderful” workshop and send compliments to you and your staff. It was delicious “food for thought “ and full of possibilities for exploring another market. I love your new music…”.Finding….Entering…..In…..etc…Beautiful Places”. Finding music like this with a mature artistic sound is so exciting for my students and the teacher!
Irina Markovich –
I liked your workshop! The fact is that I watched it live and it prompted me to think more about my own teaching, my connections and disconnections with my students, how to tame my temper, and in what capacity to give compliments or the critique, to find the boundaries. Today I watched again, to dot the things I was not able to write at the first time.
As I would like to have a few adult students, after the more thinking, I am not sure I want the true adult beginners. Most likely, I would welcomed advanced adult students( if I find them?)
On another thought I would like to express that Wendy’s music is really beatufully written, simply and easy achievable for beginners, and yet, giving them that important sense of music making, the chance to express different feelings and moods, to create and cherish that process. Thank you!

I have never been attracted to the idea of teaching adults until just recently. The thought was pretty intimidating. But after watching this workshop, I feel so empowered and excited. I decided to dip my toes be offering a 3-month course for adult beginners and teaching Beautiful Places as part of the curriculum.

Thank you, Wendy! I got it, just watched it this morning, and learned so much from you two ladies as well as the chat box! Definitely worth the time watching and the cost to buy. Thank you for all your hard work to present this to other teachers. Again, thank you!!

Very fascinating. I’ve taught only 7 adults in 40 years. It was easier to teach non-friends, less talking, fewer apologies, missing lessons due to “being unprepared”, etc. All of my adult students were insecure and I felt like the encouragement/psychology I used with my younger students did not work with the adults. This workshop was really needed and would have been wonderful to watch “back then”! (But there wasn’t internet then 😀 ) Hmmm, maybe I’ll ask my former adult students if they’d like to try again! Your pieces are gorgeous!!

This workshop is worth the money! I did not attend this workshop in real time, but saw it on my own time (a blessing). It was sooooo refreshing! I have always taught adults (I have 9 currently) but needed new ideas to encourage me so that I could engage them in a more meaningful way. The ideas regarding music, advertising, alternate policies, and decor for adults was energizing. Thanks, Wendy and Amanda!
