The Last Leaf begins our new early intermediate series called Beautiful Wonders – a continuation of the much-loved Beautiful Places elementary series.
The inspiration for this winsome piece comes from literature and family memories. When Wendy was young, her grandfather introduced her to the short stories of O. Henry. “The Last Leaf” was one of her favorites – she found it both sad and hopeful at the same time. And this piece depicts that reflective, mournful and beautiful time when that last autumn leaf falls to the ground.
What level is The Last Leaf?
The Last Leaf is an early intermediate piece written in D Major. The smallest note value is an eighth note, and the largest interval is a seventh. Solid pedagogical dynamics and articulations are indicated, and legato pedaling is indicated throughout.
The piece is written in common time, and has a good sense of forward motion and opportunity for expression, as well.
Bonus recordings included!
The Last Leaf includes a bonus mp3 of this performance with your purchase. You may send this mp3 to your student to help them learn the piece and remember how it sounds.
Plus, a QR code is included on the first page of the PDF (not pictured in the sample) so students can scan the code and it will take them directly to the performance recording of the piece. This can help them be inspired and learn the piece even more effectively without you having to send the mp3 to them!
As with all our music, the beautiful cover is also included!

Karen Hesterly –
The last leaf is very pretty. I am taking my time teaching it to my class so they can learn the first pattern is like the second pattern even though it starts on a different note. I love the way Wendy writes easily recognizable patterns in such a beautiful way allowing the student to play more difficult sounding music than is in their method book.
Valerie Alfonso –
I am so excited that Wendy is expanding the Beautiful series into Early Intermediate! This lyrical style of music is so expressive, while being very accessible in technique. Always, always a win!!!
Thank you Wendy!!!

This is such a pretty piece and I love its inspiration of the O’Henry story. (He was born in my hometown.) My student was intrigued too and is enjoying learning it.
