That colorful garden gnome sitting innocently among the daffodils and tulips is just a garden trinket…or is it? That demure decoration may look sweet, but don’t be fooled. It’s really planning a sneaky, mischievous nighttime foray across your lawn! Students will love these silly lyrics and staccatos throughout the piece that sound just like little tiptoeing feet in the night. And they’ll especially love the rests in this piece – because that’s when they get to freeze just like a gnome statue who doesn’t want to get caught!
Sneaky Gnomes is the 6th piece in our popular Mystical Creatures Series (See Mythical Creatures Bundle 1 and Mythical Creatures Bundle 2 and Mythical Creatures Bundle 3). Your purchase includes the original cover artwork and a special bonus gnome coloring page!
Level of Sneaky Gnomes
Sneaky Gnomes is a late elementary piece written in D minor. There is no key signature indicated; instead, accidentals are included. The smallest note value is an eighth note. The eighth note is always part of the main motive, and is very easy to learn and play thanks to intentional hand position and fingering. Multiple registers are played, always with repeating patterns that add to the feeling of havoc these gnomes are causing in the night.
There is no pedaling in Sneaky Gnomes. Rests are an important part of the fun in this piece, which makes it a wonderful way for students who “forget” about rests to practice this skill. Silly lyrics are included, and multiple dynamic markings make it a dramatic piece that is fun to play.
Bonus Coloring Page + Mp3 file
Every piece in our Mythical Creatures series, including Sneaky Gnomes, includes a beautiful coloring page with our original artwork. In addition, your purchase also includes the beautiful cover (always included in our pieces). Students can start a collection of mythical creatures by printing these and hanging them on their wall at home!
Sneaky Gnomes also comes with a bonus mp3 performance of this piece. You are permitted to send this mp3 file to your student to help them learn the piece.
The Mythical Creatures Bundles
Fairy Dust can also be purchased as a discounted bundle. We have two Mythical Creatures Bundles:
- Mythical Creatures Bundle 1 includes Unicorn Gliding, Mermaid Wishes, and Dragon Dreams
- Mythical Creatures Bundle 2 includes Fairy Dust, Leprechaun Leaps, and Troll Trouble
- Mythical Creatures Bundle 3 includes Sneaky Gnomes (this piece) and Elves Immortal
What is a studio license?
Sneaky Gnomes comes with a studio license which licenses the purchasing teacher to print as many copies as needed for any student they directly teach. So it is like getting an unlimited supply of this Music Kids Love® for yourself and your students. The studio license is not a multi-teacher license, so it can only be used by one teacher. However, the music and bonus can be used by as many students as the purchasing teacher directly instructs on a regular basis.
You can see more elementary music with a studio license here!

Sneaky Gnomes is so cleverly written, with moments that give students opportunities for laughs, creative expression, and character exploration through sound, even as they build pattern recognition with notes and rhythms. Sneaky Gnomes is a great year-round piece! I can even see using this and other pieces from Mythical Creatures for a more-playful less-spooky Halloween theme. RECITAL IDEA: Taken as a whole, all Mythical Creatures pieces could make for a FANTASTICALLY engaging recital that invites ACTIVE LISTENING — get a small group of kids together who’ve each played one of the mythical creatures, assure they stay mum about their “secret identities” and then inform the group: “We’ve got a Troll, a Fairy, a Mermaid, and a Sneaky Gnome among us today! Can you guess who is who?”

Just had to jump in here, Jessica because that’s a great recital idea! Thank you for sharing!
