Reptile Crush is an exotic-sounding elementary level piano solo that is ideal for any student who loves creepy, slithery creatures! Whether it’s a crocodile, a skink, a lizard, or a snake, these reptilian pets are perfect because they’re different. Students will love lyrics about the pets no one else seems to like, especially at the end of the piece when they “slither” down multiple registers to reach the end of the song!
The level of Reptile Crush
Reptile Crush is an elementary level piece written in C Hungarian minor. There is no key signature indicated, instead all accidentals are included. The Hungarian mode gives the piece an exotic sound, which is important for students when much of the piece is filled with repeated patterns. Lyrics are included, and are a wonderful way for students to visualize the phrasing written in the music. The shortest note value is a quarter note.
The treble clef is played in both hands for the last three lines of Reptile Crush, and some left hand over right hand occurs at the very end of the piece in a repeating pattern. Optional pedaling is included at the very end of the piece, and is easy for students at this level to play.

I have a 6 year old student who LOVES reptiles and bugs (we bond over the fact that we both have leopard geckos). I printed this off for him to play at our Halloween recital and he is loving it and learning it so quickly. There are parts of it that I’ve had to teach by rote since he hasn’t learned all the notes on the staff yet, but the patterns make it so easy. So fun to see him inspired!
