The pets have spoken, and they are quite insulted! What is it with all of the bird phrases these humans use? “Eat like a bird” and “Dead as a Dodo” are just some of the sayings they’re all tired of hearing.

Not only do the lyrics communicate this insistence, but clever use of staccatos right before a phrase make the music itself sound as if it is curt and offended. This piece creates a wonderful opportunity for students to see how playing affects the mood of a piece and it is so fun to play!

The level of I Speak for the Birds

I Speak for the Birds is an elementary piece written in D minor. Accidentals are written in, no key signature is indicated. It is written in triple meter, and the smallest note value is a quarter note. There is no pedaling. This piece contains a lot of slurring, which can be easier to teach because there are lyrics. Students can visualize and feel the concept of a musical sentence when there are actual sentences accompanying the music. Accent marks and staccatos also aid in the feeling of a sentence being spoken.

The main motive uses thirds repeatedly in the left hand. This makes the piece easier to play, and gives students a chance to read and learn the lyrics while they play. Helpful fingerings and dynamics are included. I Speak for the Birds does not explore multiple registers, and there is no change in hand position.
