Just like the original, Holiday Music This or That™ is a fun way for you to “get inside the heads” or your students! Knowing how your students think allows you to teach more effectively because you get to know them in a fun way. And when our students feel known, they are far more likely to be motivated and encouraged!
How does Holiday This or That Build Connection?
Here’s just some of the ways this game helps your students connect (to you and one another):
- It’s a wonderful ice breaker.
Students share and chat about these questions as they group themselves. - It establishes camaraderie and friendship.
Students quickly find themselves connecting with students of similar opinions. - It can reveal ways you can connect with your students.
The more you know about your students, the more effective you can be in teaching. - Music This or That validates children’s opinions.
What kids think about music is important too!
Holiday Music This or That cards features questions that kids love to answer because kids love sharing their opinions. But they aren’t always asked for their opinion! Many of the questions are music specific, but several are also fun questions that kids will delight in being asked about.
Not only will you discover how students feel about performing, learning holiday music, holiday recitals, and types of music they like. You’ll also learn more about their personal preferences, which can help you to engage – especially with students who are shy or don’t share their thoughts.
This game is also a fantastic way for students to get to know one another. Not only does this give students a feeling of belonging within your studio, it can help with recital and performance nerves to feel that the peers watching are also friends. It’s also a wonderful way for students of different ages to get to know one another, when they otherwise may not know how to interact with one another!
How to assemble Holiday Music This or That
All you need to do is print the cards out on white cardstock and then cut them along the grey lines. That’s it!
How to play Holiday Music This or That
Ask one of the “Would you rather” questions to your students. If in a group, point one way to direct students who answer THIS way to go to the right and THAT way to go to the left. For example, when you ask the question:
Would you rather learn a slow holiday song or a fast one?
Point to the right when you say “slow” and point to the left when you say “fast” so that students can then hurry to the location that shows their preferred answer! Watch as students laugh to rush to their preferred spot, learn about one another, and engage.

We had game days the week after our Christmas recital and we used This or That for our first activity. It was a great first game and they liked choosing their answers. I had smaller groups but not a lot of space so we put the words this / that on cards and placed them on our game table. They did a long arm stretch and placed their hands on their answer. They had fun and no one knocked over my Christmas tree. Yay!

Last month I purchased the two holiday games from ComposeCreate, Holiday This or That and Stinky Stockings. I held two student parties/recital prep classes. I have an older group and a younger one. The “This or That” served its purpose as a great ice breaker. I had at least two students arrive in a rather unsociable mood and this game got them in the swing of things! Everyone else seemed to enjoy it too although I accused them of being like little lemmings as they all seemed to gravitate to the same side!
Stinking Stockings was also fun and provided a fun warm up activity to the students’ sharing of their recital pieces; they were relaxed at that point and all went well.
Thank you, Wendy, for these clever and engaging games!

My piano students loved playing this at the beginning of my studio Christmas party at my home, and was a great icebreaker. They had lots of fun and seemed to really like it

The local music teachers association held a teen night. This or That was a terrific break the ice game. I look forward to playing Holiday This or That this season with my students. This is a good game to play between materials during lesson.
Thank you for games students enjoy.
