In this arrangement, the lovely melodies of Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella and The Holly and the Ivy are interwoven brilliantly with Scarlatti’s Sonata in C Major, K. 159. The opening and closing presentations of Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella are bright and festive like an exquisitely decorated Christmas tree. The middle section is a warm contrasting setting of The Holly and the Ivy.
What Level is Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella with The Holly and the Ivy?
This arrangement is advancing. The tempo is quick just like the Scarlatti Sonata. Fingering is suggested in challenging passages. Pedaling, dynamics, and articulations are all notated. The piece is primarily in compound meter, switches to 7/8 occasionally and then into triple meter in the middle section. The piece remains in C Major throughout.
The C instrument part is included in the piano score, but is also included as a separate score for ease of reading.

Such fun! I’ll be playing this as a special recital feature with a student who plays violin as well as with a friend who plays flute for a service. I transposed it to clarinet and played with a student who needed to practice accompanying and I have two students who want to work on it for next year. I had no idea how popular this would end up being!

This is the most lovely arrangement – it evokes such emotion out of me from somewhere deep inside and I just want to cry with a lack of words to describe why. I asked a dear friend who plays flute to perform it with me in front of a large audience and it was well-received. I highly recommend this for advanced musicians. We tampered down the vivace tempo a bit and it was a joy to perform.

I am looking forward to playing this as a prelude on flute with our church pianist. She loves it and so do I!!! So clever to pair it with Scarlatti!

Excellent arrangement! I use many of Wendy’s pieces for my 35 students, but this one I saved for a beautiful prelude at my church with a teen violinist who is such a joy to accompany.
