I just saw a fabulous video, appropriate for teachers, musicians, and even children, about what happens when we copy creative works. While it might seem somewhat self-serving to blog about this, I will tell you that composers especially get so little of the money made from music that sometimes it’s completely un-motivating to write anything! If you want to know what makes what in the print music business, read this post: Who Makes What in Music Publishing
In the meantime, I hope you’ll share this adorable video with your students, family, friends, and other teachers!
And thank you to all of you who don’t copy copyrighted music! You help me and many others in the publishing industry to make a modest living.
Thanks for sharing a great visual of something so blatantly obvious.
Thanks for posting this. Copyright is so complicated that it is nearly impossible to explain
to non-lawyers. This film makes it clear enough even for children to understand. Creators
need to be supported in order to keep on giving us all the cool STUFF they create. It isn’t
just a legal right it is a human right to be paid for the use of our work and in the end everyone
benefits.
Thanks for ‘sharing’
Several years ago I went thru my entire collection of music (since high school!) and destroyed photocopies. I cannot describe the happiness I felt doing the right thing! Music isn’t too hard to find or that expensive to purchase. Thanks for posting this Wendy!
