This exercise takes a little practice.  Here are a few helpful hints:
In order to choose a note without an accidental, just click the middle button (like C-Do)
If you want a C#, you will click the box that is a sharp sign under the C.
If you want a Db, you will click the box that is a flat sign under the D.

Writing Modes

Take out a piece of manuscript paper.
Write the following modes:

A Aeolian
B Locrian
G Mixolydian
E Phrygian
C Ionian
F Lydian
D Dorian

Identifying Scales 

Go to Teoria Scale Identification.
Scales: Major and minor scales, Major scale modes, Pentatonic Scales
Tempo: Medium
Stop exercise after: 5 minutes
Maximum Time: leave this unchecked
Record your score.

NOTE: This exercise does not drill you on the Whole Tone scale which you will also need to know.

Write Major, minor, Perfect Intervals

Go to Teoria Interval Construction.
Intervals:  All Major intervals, all minor, and all perfect intervals
Accidentals: Choose Sharps and Flats.
Direction: Choose Both
Check  and set the box to say Stop the exercise after 7 minutes.
Maximum time to answer: Do not check this box.

Write Augmented and Diminished Intervals

Go to Teoria Interval Construction.
Intervals: Only Augmented 4, 5 (this does not drill 8ths, but you will need to know this as well)
Accidentals: Choose Sharps and Flats.
Direction: Choose Both
Check  and set the box to say Stop the exercise after 5 minutes.
Maximum time to answer: Do not check this box.
Record your score.

Identify Tritones

Go to MusicTheory.net Interval Identification.
Record your score.

OR

Go to Teoria Interval ID.
Intervals: Only Augmented 4, 5
Accidentals: Choose Sharps and Flats.
Direction: Choose Both
Check  and set the box to say Stop the exercise after 5 minutes.
Maximum time to answer: Do not check this box.
Record your score.

Students, here are the things to keep in mind for Level 9:

  • Each example will begin on the tonic
  • Some examples may be in minor and will incorporate the use of melodic minor. Be sure to raise the 6th and 7th note when ascending.
  • The examples may 2 sixteenths
  • The examples will use intervals through 8ths
