Quick and Easy Summer Games

Looking for a quick and easy game for your beginning, intermediate, and advancing students? Here’s a few that are available on ComposeCreate.com which I rarely mention, but teachers love:

Fishy Flashcards

Young students loves this familiar carnival game! Students can fish for these fun flashcards with a fishing pole made from a pole, string and magnet. Students must correctly identify the cards that are caught. Students can earn points for their team by correctly identifying the flashcards.

These flashcards come as a PDF file of 15 pages with 4 fish per page. Instructions are included. An encrypted link to the flashcards will come to you via email after you pay. After downloading the PDF, print the cards on colorful card stock paper, laminate, and cut. You can purchase a magnet and pole at your local hardware store.

The 60 fish cover dynamics, steps and skips, half and whole steps, note names, note and rest values, and various other beginning musical concepts.

Stinky Sox

This is now a classic in many piano studios and is super fun to play with beginning, elementary, and early intermediate students. Stinky Sox cards are come in 2 levels, divided into 4 categories:

  • Keyboard Skills
  • Theory Knowledge
  • Singing / Ear Training
  • Acting

To play, place these Stinky Sox cards in an old, dirty looking sock. Students sit in a circle and pass around sock while listening to music. When the music stops playing, the student with the sock pulls out a card and follows the instructions.

These cards come as a PDF file of 6 pages with 18 cards per page and are divided into primary and secondary levels. Instructions are included. An encrypted link to the game will come to you via email after you pay. After downloading the PDF, print the cards on colorful card stock paper and laminate. A grid to show cutting lines is included as is the Stinky Sox logo for the back of the cards.

Affirm-a-term

When was the last time you played a game with your advanced students that they loved? This game works for elementary to advanced students and is a bit similar to Taboo and Password.

To play, divide players into 2 teams and sit in a large circle alternating team members. The first player is given a stack of cards and has 1 minute to describe as many of the words on the cards so that their team members are able to guess the correct word. The player to the right of the student (on the opposite team) should watch to make sure the student does not use any form of the word in their descriptions. After 1 minute, points are calculated and the next student in the circle (on the opposite team) gets a turn. The game is over when a given time period has elapsed or everyone has had a turn to “Affirm-a-term.”

These cards come as a PDF file of 15 pages with 18 terms per page divided into primary and secondary levels (which include words that even teachers have to think about!). Instructions are included. An encrypted link to the game will come to you via email after you pay. After downloading the PDF, print the cards on colorful card stock paper and laminate. A grid to show cutting lines is included as is the Affirm-a-Term logo for the back of the cards.
