This beautiful piano solo by Diane Hidy is a breath of fresh air for a weary soul. The contemporary sound is peaceful, yet it moves the spirit to a hopeful place. Just for Now is a wonderful opportunity for early intermediate students to express their emotions or learn to communicate emotionally through music. The piece ends in a big and powerful way.
What Level is Just for Now?
Just for Now by Diane Hidy is early intermediate level. The smallest note value is the eighth note. There are no significant syncopations, but the B section shifts into a compound meter producing some hemioli. Syncopated pedaling is written in throughout the piece. The piece is in G Major, but all the accidentals are written in, so there is no key signature.

I purchased this piece this morning and I have been enjoying the immediate satisfaction of creating beautiful sound. The 6/8 middle section has a hook that I can’t get out of my head. My students will love it.

This is a peaceful piece. The harmonies are interesting as well as the time differences.

My students (one in particular) will love this piece. I’m not very familiar with Philip Glass, but the B section makes me think of his work and one of my students loved hearing another student at piano camp play Glass and I think this will give her a first taste of his style. But not infinitely repetitive! 🙂

I can’t wait to give this to my intermediate student. Very interesting melody and flowing scales. Very effective sound with interval accompaniment. The time signature changes from a 4/4 time in a the A section to a 6/8 time. It gives it a different sound and character. Then a return to the A section may be a bit challenging in the left hand to hit the 8vb intervals accurately. Memorizing this piece will help with this. Your Intermediate students will sound great!

I have given this piece to two teenage intermediate students. Given as a sight reading piece for their 30-piece challenge sheet, it is a piece that requires a couple of weeks for them to master because of the leaps in the B section. They enjoy the flowing melody, modern harmony, and the challenge of the octave leaps in the B section. It is soothing, sophisticated, easily accessible.

My intermediate students like the energy of this piece. It’s like a breathe of fresh air from their method books.
Section B takes a little more effort but is all the more sweeter once mastered! A gem for my students!

Lovely piece with a contrasting middle section in 6/8. A good rhythmic puzzle!
I played this myself at church.

I am using this with one of my adult students and he absolutely loves it! The first piece he has really stuck with and obviously practices it a lot… I love being able to teach the time signature changes from 4/4 to 6/8 and keeping the value of the eight note steady. A great composition and thank you for this piece!!

I gave this to an adult student who told me the following lesson, “I can’t stop playing this piece!” When I told her that I had heard the composer play it and explain her thought process for writing it, she said, “Wow! I didn’t think it would be possible for me to love it more, but I do!” It’s a beautiful piece that flows so well. It has quickly become a favorite piece in my studio!!

An absolutely beautiful piece that allows the student to sound much more advanced. One of my favorites!

“Just for Now” is an emotionally satisfying piece for teens and adults, especially given the backstory which resonates with all of us, I believe. If I understand correctly, Diane composed the piece during the pandemic with the idea that this time in our lives is “just for now.” It will pass. Having said that, I think students will find this piece appealing for years to come.

This piece has been a huge hit in my studio! Both boys and girls, younger and older, everyone is crazy about this! Thank you, Diane, for a winner that is sure to be popular for years!
