New, Free Snowman Interval Cards – Winter Olympic Challenge!

Scores of teachers have emailed me to tell me that they are using the Snowman flashcards for winter challenges for their students. So, I decided that for the next 3 weeks, I’m going to hold a mini Winter Olympics Competition with my elementary and some of my early intermediate students using these and some NEW flashcards that I just created! (Note: I actually created ANOTHER set of snowmen flashcards for white keys since the newsletter came out! Thanks for the suggestion.)

We’ve already started last week and it was so fun to see how motivated the kids were to improve their times!

Winter Olympic Challenge

Here are the 3 games they will play for the next 3-4 weeks. They can play them 3 times at each lesson to try to improve their time.

Download ALL the Snowmen here:

Bea’s Bobsled Race:

Student will have a total of 11 “Bea’s Keys” which are little note name flashcards that fit on the keys of the piano. Each student will get a different set of keys (depending on their level) so that they will be competing fairly.

Build a Snowman Note Name Race:

Yes, let’s go ahead and play off of the “Frozen” movie too! In this race, students will match the 10 flashcards which have a picture of a note on the staff and a letter name. This drills the same skill as the previous race, but in a different way.

  • Snowmen Note Names (Simply cut these out and then cut the bottom of the snowman off from the top, separating the note name from the note picture on the staff.)
  • Snowmen White Keys (These are new!)

Build an Interval Snowman:

snowman 5thSame kind of race, on this time, they have to match either steps and skips (for beginners) or intervals (2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths, 8ths). For this competition, you can use these free flashcards (make sure that they have an equal amount of cards to keep the competition fair):

  • Snowmen Steps and Skips (for your young students)
  • Snowmen Intervals (for the older students. These are new!) Notice that the interval snowmen have a blue hat. That’s so that you can keep them straight!

Rhythm Manipulations Challenge:

I won’t be leaving my Jr. and Sr. High students out since competition is super motivating to this age of students! They’ve got their own challenge going right now, but it’s with YOUR students. They just need some competitors from your studio. Read about the most recent Rhythm Manipulations Challenge

Olympic Note Name Prizes:

If students reach the goal for the 3 games, they will each get to pick a small prize from my prize box. The student with the fastest time will get $1 per game. [So, since I have 3 separate games, I give out $3.) I don’t do this for the older students though. They just like the competition.

Olympic Training:

You can send these links to your students to help them improve their note naming ability at home. Note that there are 3 different levels of games:

Easy (drills Bass F to treble G)

Moderate (drills low G to high G)

Advanced (drills low C to high C)

If you are holding some kind of winter olympics event using these flashcards I’d love to hear about it!  Don’t forget to make sure you sign up for the ComposeCreate newsletter to get updates to all free resources! 1. Hi Wendy,

Great ideas! I just wanted to let you know that I couldn’t access the file for the interval snowmen or the links for students. None of them seem to be working. Thanks!

  2. Hi Sheryl,
Thanks for the alert. They all seem to be working fine right now. Maybe a momentary glitch? Can you try again and let me know if they work for you?

    Wendy

  3. Thanks for these! The interval snowman aren’t working for me either…

Also would it be too much trouble to do a keyboard version for young beginners? I would love for them to participate in a note reading challenge but they haven’t learned the notes on the staff yet. 🙂 Thanks!

  4. Hi ladies, I’m not sure why they aren’t working for you. All 3 browsers on my end are working. Make sure you have the latest version of Adobe installed. Here’s a direct link to the file: https://composecreate.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/Snowmen-Intervals.pdf

Jennifer, I’d love to do that if I have time. For my beginners though I’m just teaching them about the way steps and skips look on the staff and then giving them those to compete with. I figure a pre-lesson on reading lines and spaces won’t hurt them any. I’ll let you know if I have time to do the keyboard.

  5. Okay…my bad. It was a mixed up file path on the back side. My apologies ladies! Thanks so much for your patience. Should be good to go now!
