New Competitions for Student Composers!

One of the purposes of this blog is to help teachers encourage student creativity, improvisation and composition. You can find practice articles on how to teach composition in the Composition for Kids category as well as a comprehensive list of all the competitions available to students composers. I have recently updated the Composition Competitions for Students to include the following two new competitions!

Carol Klose Hal Leonard Composition Competition

Hal Leonard has announced a new online piano composition competition for students created in honor of Carol Klose (1945-2013), a popular piano teacher and prolific Hal Leonard composer. The purpose of the competition is to encourage the creative musical spirit that Carol established by giving piano students a platform to compose, perform and share their original piano compositions. There is no entry fee. Stay tuned for more details. This competition has 3 age divisions:

  • Jr. Composer (12 and under)
  • Teen Composer (13-18)
  • Collegiate Composer (19-23)

Prizes include $100, $200, and $300 gift certificates from Hal Leonard. The collegiate composer winner will be published by Hal Leonard.

  1. Is this competition still running? I was unable to find any current information about it and am prepping to host a composition clinic for our local MTA teachers. Any updated information would be appreciated!
