New African Rote and Reading® Piece!

Romp and Raid - intense, suspense but easy rote and reading piano recital piece for elementary piano students | ComposeCreate.com #teaching #piano #recital #music #rote #teaching #easy #piece

You’ve been asking for more rote and reading® pieces like African Safari and Savannah Stalk, so I’m so excited to tell you that there is now a third “rote and reading® piece” available!

Here’s the story…

African hyenas are romping around on the African tundra. They saunter around as if they have no cares in the world.

But wait! Listen! The ears of the hyenas stand tall as they feel the slight vibration in the ground.

And they’re off! The hyenas immediately shift into hunting mode as they move in formation toward their prey. The beat of their paws in rhythm with each other strikes terror into any nearby animals. They surround the area…

Then, what happens?

That’s up to you and your students! What does the music suggest? I’d love to hear how your students think the Romp and Raid story ends!

Romp and Raid – The New Rote and Reading® Piece

Romp and Raid is playful but intense sounding! You can easily teach Romp and Raid by rote, by reading, or by a combination of both! Easy patterns up and down the piano give the student a sense of accomplishment and a big sound. When you teach this rote and reading® piece, students get the opportunity to experience:

  • Chromaticism (you don’t have to explain it…just let them experience moving from black key to white key)
  • Triple meter
  • Accents and intense sounds
  • Moving up and down the piano

Experiencing music is the foundation to learning to read music. Just as kids learn to speak before they read, kids learn best when being encouraged to play music before they read music! When combined, teaching music by sight and sound is a much more well balanced way for students to experience music.

But even if you don’t like rote teaching, I think your students will love the adventure of the piece even by reading it!

  1. Thank you Wendy for bringing a smile to one of my student’s face that I haven’t seen in awhile He is so excited to play African Safari and Savannah Stalk in our recital – maybe Romp and Run too!! Thank you so much!!!

  2. Hi Nancy,

Thanks so much for commenting! I’m glad you and your student like it. And I’m super glad that it brought a smile to his face and that he’s excited. I love to hear that!

  3. Hi Wendy! I would like to purchase a single piece but do not see the way how I could do it! (Seems the link isn’t working or there is some error) Thanks for your help!

  4. Thank you so much for your interest in the African Safari piece! It looks like you were on an old blog post instead of the product page, so I’m happy to direct you there so you can purchase it. Here you go: https://composecreate.com/product/african-safari/

Thanks again for your interest! Let me know if you have any other questions! I’m happy to help!

  5. I have a fun-loving high school boy who loves lessons but NOT practicing! He has some pretty hefty goals when it comes to what pieces he’d like to play but I decided he needed a few easy-to-manage short term goals/rewards. Romp and Raid was the perfect piece. I’m hoping the concepts that are so accessible (repeating patterns, manageable practice sections etc) in this piece will transfer to more challenging repertoire he has selected for the future.
