MTNA 2016 Session: “Have You Forgotten What It’s Like to be a Child?”

My MTNA 2016 Session

If you are attending the MTNA 2016 conference, I would love to have you attend my session “Have You Forgotten What It’s Like to be a Child?” I actually didn’t submit this session as a session proposal, but was asked by MTNA to present it on Pedagogy Saturday. It’s relevant to all teachers from age 18 to 88, so I hope you can come. Here is a description of what we will be discussing:

It’s been anywhere from 10 to 70 years since any of us have been a child, so it’s pretty certain that all of us have forgotten at least some of what it’s like to be a child. In this session, you will learn 5 characteristics of childhood that we forget and 25 practical ways to apply this knowledge to help your students leave every single lesson feeling excited and competent!

MTNA 2016 Session - Have You Forgotten What It's Like to be a Child?I know that there are many excellent sessions that are going on during this time at the MTNA conference, some of which I’d love to attend, so I know it’s a tough choice. I thought it might be helpful to give you some of the feedback I’ve been given after presenting this session to several state conferences in the last year:

This was no doubt one of the very best sessions we’ve hosted and many of the comments I heard afterwards confirmed this. Several teachers from neighboring organizations told me that they were so glad that they were able to attend and that it was definitely worth their time.  ~ Davis Dorrough, Central Oklahoma MTA President

Thanks for your excellent presentation! It was so encouraging to me to hear your understanding for children and what matters to them in learning to make beautiful music. I was so refreshed after seeing the way you sorted through the complexities of teaching and gave us simple principles we can all follow. ~ Christy Kiespert, NCTM

Thank you for all you do to inspire students and teachers alike! Your joy and enthusiasm is contagious!   ~ Emma Gee, Private Piano Teacher
