So, we wanted to create a brand new resource, the Winter Sports Music Games, to say thank you for being a ComposeCreate supporter!

These Winter Sports Music Games were carefully designed by our artist to be colorful and energizing! There are lots of music games you can do with these cards and the variations are endless, so feel free to share your own ideas about how you use the cards in the comments below.

Are you sure they are free?

Yes! We like to surprise teachers who receive the ComposeCreate newsletter with special gifts periodically, so this is one of those surprises!

I’ve had teachers express concern that we can’t stay in business for long by designing top notch resources and giving them away. And if you think that, you are right. But the way we do stay afloat is when teachers purchase ComposeCreate music from our store. So thank you to all of you who purchase music from me! All the teachers that get this resource and so many of the other resources are so grateful to you, as am I!

What’s included in the Winter Sports Music Games?

We have four sets of fun files to share with you and you can play lots of different games with them as detailed in the next section. Here is what you get:

  • Winter Sports Notes on Staff
  • Winter Sports Note Letter Names
  • Winter Sports Steps and Skips (with special game characters playing)
  • Winter Sports Intervals (with special game characters for playing)

Stand Up Flashcard Game:

Goal:

To help student not only identify the names of the white keys or notes on the staff, but also to know where they are on the piano. We have designed these flashcards in such a way that they can stand up in the piano keyboard, making it easier to ensure that students not only know the name of a note, but also its exact location on the keyboard.

Cards you can use for this:

  • Winter Sports Notes on Staff OR
  • Winter Sports Note Letter Names

Directions:

  1. Give the student a set of cards you want to review.
  2. Ask them to insert the correct note to the right of the correct white key.
  3. Time your student and challenge them to beat their time. Display their best time in your studio

Goal:

To help students correctly identify/match the name of the note with the picture of the note. They will do this by matching the male figure skater (staff note) with the female skater (note name).

Cards you need for this:

  • Winter Sports Notes on Staff
  • Winter Sports Note Letter Names

Directions:

  1. Choose which pairs you want your students to practice.
  2. Mix up the pairs and ask the students to match them.
  3. Time the student and challenge them to beat their time or beat other students’ times. Put the names of all who achieve better than a specific time on the Gold medal podium (e.g. 60 seconds).

Downhill Race Game:

Winter sports music games - Free and only available at ComposeCreate.com! #piano #teaching #winter #sports #games #theory #music #education #flashcards

Goal:

To help students identify intervals by sight and also to be able to move that distance on the piano keys. Students do this by seeing which winter sport character gets to the top or the bottom of the keyboard first by correctly identifying the interval and moving their game character the same interval down the piano. Whoever gets to the bottom of the keyboard first wins.

Cards you need for this:

  • Winter Sports Steps and Skips OR
  • Winter Sports Intervals

Directions:

  1. Have students pick their winter sport character (at the end of both the steps and skips file AND the interval file).
  2. Place characters between the highest notes on the piano facing to the bass.
  3. Take turns drawing steps/skips or interval cards and name the interval, moving down the keyboard that amount each time. If you get a card with 2 skips, you can move 2 skips down. If you get a “unison” card, you lose a turn and cannot move at all.

Challenge Game (Groups):

Goal:

To help students quickly identify or play various theory concepts like note names, white key notes, intervals, or steps and skips (click here to find Steps and Skips music). Students do this by racing each other to see who can name the interval or note or who can play it first.

Cards you need for this:

Any of the winter sports music games cards will work!

Directions:

  1. Divide students into two teams and have them stand in a line behind a table.
  2. Place a call bell on the table and instruct students to stand with their hands behind their backs.
  3. Show the front two students a card from the appropriate set.
  4. When they know the answer, they can ring the bell and say it immediately OR they can race to the piano to play the correct note.
  5. Students who answer correctly get to keep their card. The student with the most cards wins.

Challenge Game (Individual):

Goal:

To help individual students quickly identify or play various theory concepts like note names, white key notes, intervals, or steps and skips. Students do this by trying t accurately identify or play a set number of cards in a specific amount of time.

Cards you need for this:

Any of the winter sports music games cards will work!

Directions:

  1. Choose the cards that you want your student to master. This can be a different number for each student, depending on their level.
  2. Decide what time intervals you want as goals. For example, your bronze medal podium could be for students who complete them accurately in 80 seconds, the silver podium might be for those who complete it in 60 seconds, and the gold medal podium might be for those that complete it in 40 seconds.
  3. Every week, time the student to see how long it takes them to accurately identify their set of cards. Once they achieve a “medal,” add their name or even their character with their name on it (if you only have a few students and have room) to the appropriate place on the podium.

  1. I got online to find something new and fun to do for my group lesson today and woohoo–I found it! So glad I came to your site first! Thank you!

  2. Yay! I guess that was perfect timing then, Celia. I’m so glad that you found what you needed. Enjoy!

  3. The Olympic Game Flash cards are another great way to reinforce note names, intervals, letter names, steps and skips. Thanks for including the faint line for cutting them apart.

I’m so glad your music is on our Festival list for the next few years.

Many thanks for your contribution to our profession.

    Ann

  4. Wendy, I’m printing these immediately and warming up my laminator – a great project for me while I “watch” the Super Bowl 🙂 I love the Olympics and I’m just coming back from maternity leave, so we have been focusing heavily on theory review. These cards are literally the perfect fit for what I need right now. THANK YOU!! <3

  5. Woo-hoo! I’m so glad that they are perfect for what you need right now, Sarah! And what a great idea to laminate and cut while you are watching the Super Bowl! Have fun and thanks for downloading!

  6. Hi Wendy,
Me again. I just got a call bell from Amazon and now I forgot what game you played with it the webinar the other day. Was it with the big flashcards? Just wondering.
    Thanks,
    Carol DuBe:)

  7. Hi Carol!

Congrats on the new bell! Your kids will love it. What I used it for in the webinar the other day was with the Music Minisâ„¢, the new music motive flashcards that come with the Short Sheets Bundle 2 purchase! Plus, you can use them with the bonus you got for attending – the new giant music symbol and time signature flashcards.

But you can use them with the giant interval flashcards too or anything like this: https://composecreate.com/free-giant-music-interval-flashcards/

    Hope that helps!
