New Easy, Jazz Holiday Piano Piece

I don’t know about you, but I get really bored with early level holiday piano books. The student is usually stuck with playing just the notes of the melody without any interesting themes or motives or “hooks.” The same happens with early level hymn books and you know I’m already passionate about creating early level musical arrangements.

So you might not be surprised that I decided to do the same thing for early level holiday music. So this year, Go Tell It on the Mountain is written at the early level with a jazz sound.

Just how easy is Go Tell It on the Mountain Jazz?

Elementary Music

This arrangement (which includes a teacher duet) is written for the mid-elementary piano student. It pretty much stays in the same position the entire time (with one crossover) so even students who are shy about being all over the piano can handle it.

The smallest rhythm value in the piece is the quarter note. There are a few places where the notes are tied over the bar line.

The “position” is middle C position.

And don’t fret about that B flat. Just tell the student that it’s “this note” and point to it or mark it on the piano. No need to tell them that it’s a half step down, and all that jazz. 🙂 Just show them the note. Student should experience first. They understand later.

New easy jazz holiday piano solo Go Tell It on the Mountain by Wendy StevensA tip on the ties

The human body really needs that first beat to orient itself. So, when you teach it, tell the student that they have to whisper “1” when they get to the tie because that gives their body what it needs to get the next beat correct.

I also write “whisper 1” in the music to help remind them to do this during the week.

Bonus mp3 to send to students!

We’re including a bonus mp3 recording of the piece without voiceovers and lyrics. You can email this mp3 to your student to give them motivation to practice and an example of how to play it correctly. It’s not intended to be an accompaniment track. But the recording will let the student and parent know what the piece should sounds like during the week.
