Big Temporary Change to Our Studio License!

During this time of unprecedented distress, we at ComposeCreate are adjusting the licensing for all of our studio licensed musicRhythm MenagerieRhythm Manipulations, and Rhythm Cup Explorations PDFs. Here is what we will be adjusting to help you teach effectively during this time:

If you are teaching lessons remotely, we will be granting a temporary licensing change to allow you the freedom to send the PDF file of studio-licensed music, Menagerie™, Rhythm Manipulations™ or Rhythm Cup Explorations® to any student that you directly teach so that they can have this accessible to them during their lessons. This allowance for sending the PDF file of the music electronically will be permitted through December 31st This has become permanent! [updated 1/8/21] and then original licensing terms will apply after that date which restricts any kind of electronic submission. We are closely monitoring health recommendations during this time and will let you know if this date will be extended.

NOTE: Only the PDF of the music and the sample performance mp3 track maybe be emailed. Emailing or sharing accompaniment tracks is prohibited. Students or their family music purchase these separately.

About the rhythm tracks:

The accompaniment tracks for any of our rhythm resources are not included in any kind of permission to share and cannot be duplicated for students as these have been and will continue to be available for parents to purchase. So please invite parents to purchase the accompaniment tracks so that their child can practice with the accompaniment music at home. You will have far greater success if the student is playing these while clapping them in an online lesson than if you are playing them and having the student clap (due to the delay that is always present). Parents can purchase just the tracks without the PDF here:

My First Rhythm Cup Explorations Tracks

Rhythm Cup Explorations 1 Tracks

Rhythm Cup Explorations 2 Tracks

Rhythm Menagerie Tracks

The Rhythm Menagerie tracks are particularly helpful with home practice because the slow and medium tempo track have the rhythm clapped as it is on the page…so students can actually learn this without a teacher in that way! The fastest track is without the rhythm clapping to help test students to see if they have mastered the rhythm. **Note: There are no Rhythm Manipulations tracks yet but stay tuned!**

Other legal details:

Please remember that neither the studio license nor this temporary adjustment have ever allowed use by more than one teacher, even teachers in the same location/studio. Each teacher using the resource must have purchased their own license separately in order to use this. We do enforce our copyrights and trademarks vigorously as this is the only way that we can make a living and continue to provide piano teaching resources for teachers.

How do I send the PDF to my students?

Be sure to download the PDF to your own computer or device first. You cannot just forward the email receipt to your students as only you can download music that you purchase. For security reasons and to prevent illegal sharing, our system will only allow the email address that purchased the item to download it.

So here’s a step by step:

  1. Click on the download link in your receipt (or in your account) to download the PDF.
  2. Open up a fresh email addressed to your student and then click on the attachment paper clip.
  3. Browse out to your downloads folder to find the PDF you just downloaded and click on it to attach it to the email.

I hope this is good news for you and I’m happy to be able to do this because rhythm is one of the most fundamental parts of music and improving it will improve all music making!

If you have any questions, please let me know. In the meantime, please know that I am thinking of and praying for you all during this difficult time. We’ll be releasing more articles that should be helpful in retaining your students during these stressful circumstances.

  1. Thank you so much for this. It is a great help as there is so much to learn about online teaching. Ive got Zoom working so now need to think of my content. Its a learning curve to be sure. This helps immensely.Thank You

  2. Your article about teaching online temporarilly was shared with all the teachers at the music store I work at ( or did until it was forced to shut down as a non-necessary business) I found it very helpful and have been using many of the tips you gave as I start giving lessons over skype this week. I live in a state where all non-essential business has been shu down for 1 month. Of course I consider music essential as I have been teaching it for 25 years now. My original degree was in Music Therapy but I never used it because I am not assertive enough to go out and make my own job and then try and keep it in a country where Music Therapy will never be considered Health Care. I am having some problems with skype- especially if the parents are not familiar with it. I have not been sucessful in setting up facetime on my android tablet. I would appreciate any help with helping parents set up skype or he’ping me set up face time. I am also going to look into Zoom.

  3. This is awesome, & so generous of you, Wendy! I’ve been behind & thought I was at the end of my ability to email music to my students. Thanks for all you do to help carry us through–not just during this crisis, but all the time! You’re a treasure.
