The Perfect “Back-to-Piano in the Winter Piano Piece!”

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday break and are energized for 2017! But the likelihood of both of those things being true is probably not very high! January is just tough. And it’s not just tough for teachers, it’s tough for piano and music students too. But I’m so excited to tell you you about the perfect winter piano piece inspired by my own lovely, but coat-hating kids!

The problem with piano lessons in January

Almost every kid has experienced no schedule, no routine, few boundaries, and lots of freedom in the last few weeks. So what kid actually wants to come back to the world where they have to practice, they have to do it every day, and they probably aren’t playing a lot of music about Santa anymore! They’re back to parents telling them what to do, teachers telling them what to do, and piano teachers picking music for them. [That’s not a bad thing…but from their perspective, it’s a drag sometimes.]

Your students are just as much in the doldrums as you are.

So this year I asked myself, what kind of a piece would get kids excited about playing again? What do kids love about this time of year? What do kids hate about January? Which kind of piece would make kids feel like they have “a voice” and that their perspective is being considered?

I didn’t have to search far for the answer (though many times it’s right in front of my nose and I don’t see it). You see, I have a battle with my kids every day about wearing their coat! And it dawned on me that kids hate to wear coats and I had a feeling that they might enjoy a song about how much they hate it! See below for their reaction…

Why will your students love this winter piano piece?

Because, it’s what they are thinking! And no one seems interested in what they are thinking these days (or so they think, lol). But if you as their piano teacher give them a piece that allows them to politely but dramatically state their opinion and be doing their assignment at the same time…that’s dynamite!

I Hate to Wear a Coat - the perfect winter piano piece

Introducing: “I Hate to Wear a Coat”

Since I already knew that kids hate to wear coats, I consulted the finest, pickiest of children to find out why! I’ll admit that it’s been hard for me to motivate my own children to practice…but “I Hate to Wear a Coat” was the talk of the dinner table as well as the only piece that has motivated one of my kiddos to go to the piano to practice of their own accord in a long time!

Remember that when you get into a student’s mind and give them music that is about what they  are thinking, magic happens! Give this to any late elementary student ages 1-15, and you’ll be quite surprised and excited about what happens!
